Saturday October 20, 2007 (Day 4)
Sydney to Cairns
We are off to the next place in our adventure and that is Port Douglas via Cairns
(pronounced Cans), Australia. It is first of five flights within the continent of Australia.
This flight on Qantas that takes us North from Sydney for a 2 hour and 45 minutes
to the airport at Cairns and then a motor coach to the hotel Breakfree Portsea Resort in Port Douglas.
We have time this day to check out the town and I could finish my homework
for class and transmit it to CNM in Albuquerque, NM. In the mean time Diana was
off to tour the town on foot..We latter walked down and toured Port Douglas and
enjoyed an open air meal of Fish and Chips and some smooth Australian wine.
Port Douglas is a town in Far North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70km north
of Cairns. Its permanent population was 948 residents in 2006. The town's population
can often quadruple, however, with the influx of tourists during the peak tourism
season May-September. The town is named in honor of former Premier of Queensland,
John Douglas. Port Douglas developed quickly based on the mining industry,
other parts of the area were established with timber cutting occurring in the area
surrounding the Daintree River and with settlement starting to occur on lots
around the Mossman River by 1880.
Previous names for the town included Terrigal, Island Point, Port Owen and Salisbury.
The town is situated adjacent to two World Heritage areas, the Great Barrier Reef
and the Daintree Rainforest.
